About Prisoners Of Faith

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

Prisoners of Faith has been set up to inform the ummah about our current Muslim prisoners. The reason for implementing a penal system is to punish criminals so that they re-enter life rehabilitated or duly punished. How can it be a crime to only believe in ‘La ilaha illallah’ and to only want His rule to govern?

The incarceration of Muslims may seem like a relatively new phenomenon, since 2000 approximately 1000 Muslims have been arrested, many jailed without charge, and this is a fraction compared to other parts of the world where the atrocities are worse, yet how many of us actually remember them? How many of us take out time to find out what is happening to our brothers and sisters? Whether they are detained without charge, with charge or even convicted? Do we just believe what we see on the TV? Or should we make excuses for our brothers and sisters and give them the benefit of the doubt?

Abu Umamah Bin Sahl narrated from his father that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, “He in whose presence a Muslim is humiliated and who does not help him, being able to help him, God will humiliate him before all creatures on the Day of Judgment”. (Ahmad)

The persecution of al Saaliheen can be traced to even the early prophets, Yusuf (alaihis-salam), great scholars such as Sheikh ul Islam, Ibn Taymiyya and more recently Zainab Al Ghazali. However a marked change has occurred within the attitudes of fellow Muslims. We all agree that the beacons of Islam named above were righteous and we admire and respect them. However, why is it that we shun and ostracise today’s prisoners and their families? You do not need to have first-hand experience to acknowledge that prison, even the most comfortable one is a huge test for anyone, to have your basic rights to lead a normal life with family, the freedom to things that we take for advantage are all stripped away.

Narrated by Abu Talha Al-Ansari and Jabir Bin Abdullah, that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said, “No man forsakes a Muslim when his rights are being violated or his honour is being belittled except that Allah will forsake him at a place in which he would love to have His help. And no man helps a Muslim at a time when his honour is being belittled or his rights violated except that Allah will help him at a place in which he loves to have His help”. (Abu Dawood)

We urge you to spare a thought for these prisoners and their families, regardless of whether you agree with them or not. And do this with the lesser of the eeman, as you may not have the strength or means to campaign with your actions, nor your mouth but the least you can do is to recognize it in your heart and give them support with your du’aa. It is our duty as Muslims to support them; this support can be done by sending letters, give moral support, by comforting the families of the detainees or even du’aa.

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari Rasulullah (Peace be upon him) said: “It is not right for a man to abandon his brother for more than three days.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said, “One who helps a fellow Muslim in removing his (or her) difficulty in this world, Allah will remove the former’s distress on the Day of Judgement. He who helps to remove the hardship of another will have his difficulties removed by Allah in this world and in the Hereafter. One who covers the shortcomings of another Muslim will have his faults covered up in this world and the next by Allah. Allah continues to help a servant so long as he goes on helping his own brother (or sister).” (Muslim)

So the role of Prisoners of Faith is to inform you about the prisoners and to help them to be remembered in your du’aas constantly inshaAllah. We will have occasional events for people to attend inshaAllah. Many Muslims have a concern about the prisoners but do not know details of how they can help and support them. We want to increase awareness about the stories that the media fail to show, recount things from the prisoners side so that we can expose what ill treatment they are subject to. Please do not forget that while the media coverage stops when these men and women are put under lock and key, their lives and the lives of their families continue to pick up the pieces.

Verily Allah will ask you about the prisoners, in the hands of the Jews, crusaders, and pagans. “Why did you not free them?” Have you not heard what ‘Abdur-Rahman Ibn’ Amrah said, when ‘Umar Ibn ‘Abdul-Aziz sent him to ransom the Muslims being held in Constantinople? He asked, “O Commander of the believers! What do you advise I do if they refuse to ransom one man for one man, what should I do?” He replied, “Then offer them another infidel,” Until he asked, “What if they demand four infidels for the release of one Muslim?” He replied, “Give them whatever they want for the release of the Muslims. For by Allah, by Allah! A single Muslim is more beloved to me than all of the pagans which I hold captive.”
